Wishing.
February 5, 2007Engraved on one of the souvenirs at Pat’s Presents and Such:
I made a wish.
You came true.
(Un)weighty Matters
February 2, 2007My weight continues to drop. Two months ago, I weighed 115 pounds. During the christmas break, I hit 110 pounds. Last week, I was flabbergasted when the scale registed 102 pounds. This week, I weigh 100 pounds. Why am I losing weight? I am not eating less and for the first time in years, I am getting enough sleep. I haven't cut back on my regular consumption of chips, even. I still finish off two bags of Potato chips and a can of coke daily, promise.
What's curious is that even though I am sleeping well and at least eight hours daily, I always feel tired the day after. The right side of my body hurts. You don't even want to get my started on the migraines.
In a way, it's funny. When I wanted to lose weight, I couldn't. I've tried skipping lunch and going to aikido class. Nothing happened. Then, in December, something really terrible happened. I had to eat stress and smear campaigns for breakfast and lunch. Boy, did that ever make me lose weight fast!
Two nights back, I saw a National Geographic feature on bacteria and its relationship to weight. The program was called Mad Labs and it featured experiments that are seemingly crazy but are nonetheless useful. Doctors suspect that food intake is not directly proportional to body weight. They tested two groups of mice. One group were completely germ-free and ate germ-free food. The other group has a plethora of bacteria and ate food that rates usually eat. The result? The germ-free mice that ate germ-free food consumed almost twice as much food as the other group but remained smaller and leaner. In the next step of the experiment, doctors introduced the germ-free mice into the usual environs. The mice rapidly gained weight.
This, of course, is useless information for me. I couldn't very well have them pump me dry of bacteria, could I? Oh well. It's back to checking other people's salaries for me.
